The Annual Volunteer Programme in Sri Lanka by HelpLanka UK Charity

The annual Helplanka Volunteer Programme organised and led by Sam Goonetillake with a team of 12 Students and 3 teachers from schools in Wales and London visited Sri Lanka in July this year. The group who raised funds throughout the year taught English, music, drama and sport at St Xavier’s College Marawila, Diyagala Boy’s Town Kandana , The Seaton Cheshire Home Katana Negombo and Senanayake Kanishta Vidyalaya Ja Ela . The Funds collected after the Flood Relief Appeal totalling £5000 were utilised to fund replacement books, educational equipment and sports equipment. Funds were also raised to fund the building and equipping of a new IT Lab with 8 terminals at Senanayake School . The 12 UK students found the volunteer programme organised and run by Helplanka to be a “ life changing experience “ and they will never forget the Sri Lankan Children whom they helped. As part of the trip to Sri Lanka the group were also able to make a tour of the island to include visits to Sigiriya, Dambulla Galle & Kandy.

One of the highlights of this year’s trip was attending a reception and Tour of Temple Trees ,hosted by Mrs Rosy Senanayake Deputy Chief of Staff at The Prime Minister’s Office who personally thanked the Group on behalf of Hon Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and who also kindly presented the certificates of Merit to the Helplanka group.

Commenting on this year’s programme Sam Goonetillake Chief Executive said: “I would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Rosy Senanayake for recognising the hard work and dedication of the group in helping so many children in Sri Lanka and for hosting the reception on behalf of The Prime Minister . It is fantastic that Helplanka was able to assist after the floods and really make a substantial difference to the lives of children and be thanked by The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka ! “
