“Food for Life” at the Hela Sarana 21st Anniversary AGM

Hela Sarana AGM was held on the 25th of November 2017 at the Brent wood School sports centre Middleton Hall Lane, Brentwood CM15 8EE. Her Excellency the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Mrs. Amari Wijewardene graced the occasion as a distinguished guest. She acknowledged the contribution of the charity’s activities to empower the underprivileged Children and Families in the motherland. Mr. Jayantha Silva the President of Hela Sarana welcomed Her Excellency and the distinguished guests, sponsors, donors, fund raisers, members, well-wishers and Friends of Hela Sarana. A minute silence was observed in honour of the members and friends of Hela Sarana who are no longer with us. A special Tribute was made to the Late Mr. Raja Meehitiya, the visionary extraordinaire and its former President. Dr Jayantha Perera, General Secretary of Hela Sarana presented the minutes of the 20th anniversary annual general meeting using a more visually appealing model than the traditional. The whole portfolio activities of Hela Sarana i.e. Shelter, Education, Medical aid, Disaster relief, livelihood support, provision of clean water and improving health and hygiene that took place in this very AGM year was presented with the costs involved. Mr. Methsiri Wijeratna, the treasurer of Hela Sarana presented the audited accounts for 2016-2017.

A new committee was elected according to the constitution for the new AGM year. Mr. Jayantha Silva highlighted the completed projects for the AGM year. They included: Hela Pilisarana disaster relief project following the floods and landslides of 2017 providing dry rations to affected families in Ratnapura. Supply of four Generators to support the Sri Lanka High Commission initiative for disaster relief and provision of educational material, uniforms and other essential items to children of all 30 families in temporary accommodation camp yet to be rehoused following the floods, augmented by a cash supplement to each family. Sustainable energy initiative - Solar Village Project at Nochchiya in collaboration with the Association of Professional Sri Lankans in the UK (APSL)- Clean water Projects - further funding to upgrade the Water Purification Plant in Ulukkulama. Dr Saman Perera presented the CKD project “The food for Life” Provision of Breakfast and clean water for 40-45 patients/day undergoing renal dialysis at Anuradhapura Hospital. Hela Sarana has funded this project for over four years. The current annual cost is £7300 per year(£20/day). We have 185 donors and need 180 more for the year 2018 (figures on the day of the AGM). Education Grant Committee - Presented by Mrs Mala Polpitiye, Irie Perera and Dr Jeevanie Jayawardena indicated currently 166 primary school children and 24 university students (are being sponsored by Helasarana at the time of the presentation) and 6 primary school children (£5.00/month each) and 6 university students (£15/month each) currently in our books needing sponsors urgently.
