Fecilitates Sri Lanka Athletic Team To The World Athletic Championships 2017 – London

In the presence of a representative gathering of Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim communities and distinguished guests Sri Lanka’s Athletic Team to the World Athletic Championships 2017, now being held in London, was accorded a reception and honoured at an evening event organised by ‘Ethera Api (Akkaraiyel Naam – We Overseas) – UK Branch and held on August 07th at the Rising Sun Hotel in Sudbury Hill, London.

At their arrival, the thletic eam comprising of manager Sujith Abeysekera and athletes Indrajith Cooray, Nimali Liyanarachchi, Hiruni Widyarathna and Waruna Lakshan Dayarathna given a rousing welcome by the gathering.

Welcome and Introductory speeches were made by Ethera Api – UK Branch President, Ajantha Kangaharachchi, in Sinhala and in English and Tamil by Executive Committee Member Mohamed Marzook. Harrow Deputy Mayor, Ms. Kareema Marikkar and Newham Councillor Mr. Paul Sathianesan and Executive Committee Member Nishantha Wicremaratne delivered the Felicitation Addresses.

Momentoes awarded by Ethera Api Organisation was presented to the athletes by Ms. Kareema, Mr. Paul Sathianesan and Ajantha Kangaharachchi. One of Sri Lanka’s senior athletes, Mr. Sunil Jayaweera, who had represented his country in several international competitions and rendered yeomen service for the promotion of sport of athletics, was at hand to escort the young athletes to the stage to receive their awards.

Speaking on behalf of her team-mates Nimali Liyanarachchi thanked the organisers for arranging the event and honouring them while making them feel homely away from home with a gathering of their own people around them.

Compere Nishantha was again at his best presenting the events in his fluent Sinhala.

Together with a treat of music and sing song the athletic team and the gathering par took in a delicious hoppers and rice meal, and the event concluded with the manager and the team members appearing on the stage together and thanking the organisers and those who were present.
