Sri Lanka Ex-Service Persons Association –UK (SLESPA) held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday the 30th April 2017 with a large turn-out of members, and some supportive spouses!

Opening the meeting, Capt. Dr Sena Nanayakkara requested all the members present, to observe two minutes silence, as a mark of respect and gratitude to comrades from all three services, who are no longer with us.

Mr Sam Cooray, the Third Secretary to the Sri Lanka High Commission for the United Kingdom delivered the key note speech on behalf of H.E. Mrs Amari Wijewardena, Patron of SLESPA-UK.

The minutes of the previous AGM was read out by Maj. Selva Sathananthan(retd) and agreed. Capt.(Dr) Sena Nanayakkara (retd) presented his report summarising important events and activities carried out during the previous year. He expressed his deep satisfaction on the success of the year and thanked all members. He acknowledged that the Ex Co members were active and dependable. Events included the annual Family Get Together & combined cricket match, School OBAs Target Shooting Championship Events (Rifle & Pistol) and the New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance

At the New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance, over 1000.00 pounds were raised from the in-house raffle draw and auction of a return air ticket to Sri Lanka –courtesy Sri Lanka Air Lines. The proceeding were contributed to Hisata Sarana Project (to support a most deserving disabled service person domiciled in Sri Lanka.

Flt. Lt. Deepthi Ratnayake (retd) read out the audited annual statement of accounts (treasurer’s report. Mr Neville Jayamaha tabled the accounts and Deepthi responded to various queries raised by the members. The audited annual report was accepted as a true copy by the members The membership accepted with reluctance Deepthi’s request to remain as an ordinary member without accepting any Ex. Co. post due to her present employment commitments. The president conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Association for her long standing efforts & dedication. The membership was also made aware that the Sri Lankan Government will be filling the vacancy of the Defence Attaché to the SLHC in the UK with Brig. Priyanka Fernando.

The new Executive Committee elected for 2017/2018 is as follows: President – Capt. ( Dr) Sena Nanayakkara (Retd), Vice President- Lt. Cmdr. Kapila De Alwis (Retd), Gen Secretary- Capt. Mahen Abayasekera (Retd), Legal Secretary – Maj. Selva Sathananthan (Retd), Treasurer- Mr Aloysius Gnanapragasm (Retd) Sports Co-Ordinator- Capt. Sampath Dinesh (Retd), IPP- Col. Pasan Kularatne (Retd) Hon Auditor- Mr Neville Jayamaha (retd) General Com. Members: Wing Cmdr. Sanath Sahabandu(Retd), Capt. Poopalasingham Partheepan (Retd), Lt. Suran Fernando (Retd), Sqn. Ldr. Hemantha Satharasinghe (Retd), Flt.Lt. ( Dr) Sunanda Jayaratne(Retd) and Maj. Sarath Guneratne (Retd). The members were happy to let the new Committee to plan ahead the special events for the coming year.

At the conclusion of the AGM Agenda, members, the spouses and guests enjoyed the excellent starters and the hot buffet meal and the refreshments provided. All the members were also entertained to a superb spread of Karaoke music led by DJ Shaymal. It was so apparent that many of the members and many of the spouses demonstrated their gifted musical talent with popular songs to the amazement & joy of all present. The musical entertainment continued for several hours to the great delight of members, spouses and the guests who were so fortunate to be present. Every one wished the new Ex. Co. all the very best for another successful Year.
